Key Initiatives and Activities 2008-2009

  • Education: The pioneering Pathways to Discovery program was launched in July 2008. It offers students in-depth training for careers of inquiry, discovery and innovation in five crucial areas – clinical and translational research; global health; health and society; health professionals education; and, molecular medicine. These streamlined pathways connect training from entry to medical school into early faculty careers.
  • Research: The new UCSF Institute of Molecular Medicine enables interdepartmental recruitment and retention of outstanding physician-scientists by creating a mechanism for sharing resources for research collaboration. It is modeled on UCSF’s long-standing Program in Basic Sciences (PIBS.) The UCSF Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute is expanding its influence and ability to facilitate collaborations between basic and clinical researchers to speed results for patients. The School has launched its fourth round of bridge funding, a highly successful program to sustain research jeopardized by NIH funding cuts.
  • Patient Care: The School’s leadership is working with the leadership of the UCSF Medical Center to implement its recently completed clinical enterprise strategic plan, laying the foundation for opening UCSF specialty hospitals at Mission Bay in 2014. The School is also implementing a telemedicine program in San Francisco safety net health clinics in partnership with the City and County of San Francisco.
  • Facilities: The School has several major construction projects underway. A new Teaching and Learning Center for the UCSF campus that includes the School’s Kanbar Kanbar Center for Simulation and Clinical Skills Education will provide a technology rich environment for training of students and practicing health professionals. New buildings are underway for the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine and to house investigators from UCSF’s Institute for Regeneration Medicine, the Cardiovascular Research Institute and the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.
