The Area of Concentration in Medical Humanities

Students who enroll in the Medical Humanities AoC will participate in a one-month long core course that explores historical, cultural, and technological ways that healthy and diseased bodies have been portrayed, subjected to investigation, and understood. Research projects in the humanities are broadly defined, including history of medicine, creative writing, religious studies, the performing arts, photojournalism, and documentary film making. Examples of recent projects include:

  • narrative essays about patients' experiences of rural health care
  • poetry composition and readings reflecting on the process of becoming a physician
  • an interpretive essay about 19th-century novelists and medicine
  • a documentary about how medicine is portrayed in the media
  • writing about experiences working with dying patients in narrative and poetic forms
  • essays on human rights abuses and establishing a political voice
