"Nuts & Bolts 2" - A Guide to the Clinical Years
Section 1: General Information

Table of Contents

Grading System

The grading system in the third- and fourth-year clerkships is: H=Honors; P=Pass; E=Provisional nonpassing; and F=Fail. Other grading symbols include Incomplete (I) and In Progress (IP). These grades are noted in the student's record and the official transcript.

Honors (H) recognition may be given for outstanding performance in clerkships of three or more units. An Incomplete (I) grade is assigned when a student's work is of passing quality but is incomplete for good cause. Students may replace the incomplete grade with a passing grade and receive unit credit provided they complete the work of the clerkship as approved by the clerkship director. For clerkships covering more than one quarter where evaluation of student performance is deferred until the end of the final quarter, an In Progress (IP) grade may be assigned in the intervening quarters. The provisional non-passing grade (E) is assigned when a student's work is not yet at a passing level. It will be converted to a passing grade when the requirements for the clerkship are met satisfactorily as determined by the clerkship director. It will be converted to a failing grade (F) by the instructor if the student fails to complete satisfactorily the clerkship requirements within the time prescribed by the clerkship director and approved by the Third- and Fourth-Year Screening Committee.

Note: An incomplete (I), provisional non-passing (E), or failing (F) grade means you will be required to do make-up work as prescribed by the clerkship director and approved by the Third- and Fourth-Year Screening Committee. The specific deficiency is noted in the Medical Student Performance Evaluation/dean's letter, and comments from the passing rotation are included.
