Academic Probation

Students will be placed on academic probation if they have six or more units (4 weeks) of E or F grades in any quarter, or ten or more units (6-7 weeks) of E or F grades in three consecutive quarters. Students will be removed from academic probation following removal of all E and F grades and after one subsequent quarter of satisfactory performance while on probation. Students are subject to delayed promotion and/or dismissal if they receive additional E or F grades while on probation. When delayed promotion and/or dismissal is to be considered, the following steps are taken:

1) The Academic Standards Committee, composed of faculty and Dean's Office representatives, meets to review a student's performance and progress towards the M.D. requirements. The student is invited to attend and may bring new information and legal or other representatives.

2) The Academic Standards Committee decision is forwarded to the Vice Dean for Education for action.

3) If dismissal is recommended, the student may appeal this decision in accordance with the School of Medicine grievance procedure.
