Student Assessment

The Commitee on Student Assessment (COSA) was charged by the CCEP as a 2 year committee responsible for overseeing student assessment across the Essential Core, Clinical Core and Advanced Studies phases of the curriculum.

COSA prioritizes the creation and planning of a longitudinal system for clinical skills assessment, profiling each individual student’s strengths, weaknesses and goals for improvement over time. COSA was formed in the summer of 2004 and includes student representatives and faculty involved in Essential Core and clinical years education.

The Committee has decided to address skill acquisition in alignment with the ACGME competencies (patient care, medical knowledge, communication, professionalism, practice-based learning and improvement, systems-based practice). Three subgroups have assumed responsibility for one or two competencies each and investigated where the competencies skills are currently being taught, what skill acquisition milestones students could be expected to achieve at each stage in medical school training, and what assessment tools could be employed.

COSA will work to increase opportunities for student reflective learning through the development of mentored learning portfolios. In addition to OSCEs, examinations, and clerkship evaluations, other innovative assessment tools being examined include peer feedback, team assessments, and 360 degree assessments.
