Galina Malanina
With experience working in Moscow working as an organic chemist, Galina Malanina started working as a Staff Research Associate in a laboratory in the CardioVascular Research Institute almost 10 years ago. This lab has since moved over to the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics and the low key purposefulness with which Galina approaches her critical role has come to be depended upon by the scientists she supports more than ever. Though Galina is very modest when speaking of her responsibilities and accomplishments, the Principle Investigator of her lab says that the proteins she prepares are a sensitive three-component assembly and she is one of only a few people in the world that can make this quality material which is then shipped to collaborators as far away as Australia and Japan.

When asked what she finds most fulfilling about her job, Galina said that she likes being a member of a team and, hopefully, they have a good result. As her nominator notes, “Galina seeks no recognition. She’s rewarded with the simple thank you’s of her colleagues who dearly appreciate her efforts.” When asked what makes her successful, Galina says that she likes her job and that being a very patient and meticulous person is very helpful in this job.

Sarah Glass
The experience of being directly responsible for research projects has played a critical role in forming Sarah Glass’s approach to her role as Business Manager for Ob-Gyn’s Center for Reproductive Health Research and Policy. Her nominator describes Sarah as a prototypical manager for the 21st century. “Never one to claim credit for the outstanding work she inspires in others, she actively promotes employee development and continuing education which have been critical success factors for the Center.” Sarah describes herself as very task and results oriented. Sarah believes the success of her unit is achieved by supporting the development her staff, encouraging them to ask for support and making it okay to make mistakes. Their business office is learning environment where handling the details is balanced with a big picture perspective on the impact of their work.

The research this group contributes to is international in scope and provides opportunities for the business office to share their strengths and experience with peers in developing countries. Sarah’s contributions to research administration have also gone beyond her unit by serving as a team lead for the EBI rollout and through her participation in the department’s Financial Risk Assessment Task Force. Sarah describes her unit as a garden that, if tended well, continues to grow.

Consuelo Artigapinto
Cony has been a valued member of the Surgery department for over twenty years and she has identified the people, the learning opportunities and the dynamic environment as the drivers behind her long term commitment to this department. Her nominators point to her contributions to expense reduction in Surgery SFGH’s billing department and the dedication she displays both to her unit and her community as the reasons for their nominations. One nominator describes Cony as “truly one of the most outstanding co-workers I’ve had during my 25 years at Surgery.” While another highlights her patience, loyalty and love of her job as the motivation for their nomination. They have all noted her ability to successfully balance the rigorous demands of her work and family life.

Cony points to the support and cooperation of her co-workers as the keys to the unit’s success. As she says, “it takes a group of people to make it happen. We should all be recognized as a team.” This is completely in synch with her nominators, who cite her quiet demeanor and non-aggressive manner as reasons that this recognition may be overdue. As one of them put it, “if you have a stressful day, you can always depend on Cony to put a smile on your face, or help you with any requests.”

Maria Ragan
Maria was hired at UCSF Fresno in Finance as a temp for a two day assignment in 1996. Over the last nine years later she's gone from temporary to casual hire and then to career and she's now considered the backbone and soul of Fresno Finance.

Her nominator describes Maria as a terrific team player with a wonderful work ethic and a very wry sense of humor. When people need answers they come to her and she either knows the answer or knows where to find the answer. Since they are located 200 miles southeast of San Francisco, they seldom get to meet many of their peers or attend classes. She has made many contacts at UCSF and that help guide her group through policy and personnel changes. Maria is very well thought of by Faculty, Management, Staff, and their Community Partners and is considered a wonderful asset to UCSF and UCSF Fresno.
