Our UCSF community includes many dedicated staff, faculty and students. Ebony Labat is one of those outstanding staff members which is demonstrated by the critical role she plays in the smooth and successful functioning of the Family Health Clinic in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Faculty members recognize the daunting task of coordinating the schedules of 50 providers in the city’s largest public health clinic and understand that her hard work behind the scenes makes a huge contribution to the how smoothly the clinic runs.
Her nominator describes her as well organized but flexible to individual needs and observes that “she noticeably enjoys her job, and loves interacting with medical students, residents and faculty.” A faculty nominator notes that, “someone has said that coordinating physicians is like herding cats, and she does so with grace, humor and efficiency.” These are exactly the attributes that the Great People award is proud to recognize in Ebony.

Mariana Miranda serves as Director of the Clinical Practice Group at SFGH and received broad support for her Great People nomination from a wide array of faculty, supervisors and staff. One of her staff members has said that “Mariana has always focused on customer service as her top priority when dealing with client departments, faculty and ultimately patients. Her outstanding work ethic and years of dedicated service have set a great example.”
Many of her nominators note her role as mentor to staff. One of her nominators notes, “she has dedicated long hours and time to teach many of her employees the business flow and ethics related to providing excellent service. She is sensitive to all of her employees and is always seeking ways to provide development and growth opportunities for her staff.” Another of her nominators summarized with one of the phrases most commonly heard from Mariana, “I’m happy to help,” and concluded, “That pretty much says it all.”

As Director of the UCSF/Mt. Zion Osteoporosis Center, Dr. Sellmeyer demonstrates outstanding service to her clients and staff by assuring that bone density reports get to referring physicians in under a week and often times reviews reports the same day so they are available for patients appointments with their doctor later that day. Her nominator has noted, “it is not uncommon for volunteers to her clinical research studies to be involved in multiple studies in large part because of the respect and appreciation they receive from Dr. Sellmeyer.”
Her staff describes being inspired by her work ethic and her ability to see the big picture while paying attention to the details and earning the admiration and respect of staff, fellow researchers and subjects in the process. Under her leadership the Osteoporosis Center has grown substantially in size and impact.

The Great People award is intended to recognize employees who make a significant impact on their peers and clients and as a result make their organizations a better place to work. As Associate Director of Research Administration in the Department of Medicine, Joseph Wilson’s impact on RSA’s throughout the DOM has attracted the notice and appreciation of many.
The multiple nominations Joseph received contain a variety of consistent themes including quality service, depth of knowledge and personal support. He has been described as a wonderful teacher and mentor who is the “most knowledgeable and hard working person in the DOM.” Another says, “he is approachable and friendly and has made my transition into the RSA role an enjoyable experience.” Great People recognition often focuses on individuals who are role models and inspire others to excel. This is epitomized by the nominator who simply says, “he is a mentor for all RSA’s in the DOM, who in turn, use their skills received from Joseph to further the research and study of each grant/center.”
