March 2006

Nathan Cashdollar
Nate began his UCSF career in 2001 as an SRA I in the Department of Radiology and quickly demonstrated his natural ability to work well with scientists and his fellow research technicians. Those talents matched the needs of his growing lab and now Nate is an SRA III-Supervisor managing 12 research grants.

His nominator considers one of Nate’s major contributions to be his guidance of the testing and development of their new 4 Tesla MRI system. In response to the experimental nature of their research, he set up development groups to foster a creative and collaborative environment between scientists and SRA’s to stimulate new processing methods. Nate’s efforts have highlighted his extremely high work ethic and passion for scientific research.

Pamela Elmore
Pam has the challenging job of managing a fund portfolio, as well as serving as project manager for multiple studies and across multiple research locations. As one of her nominators has observed, Pam is meticulous and highly organized in her approach to post award management which has kept the Cancer Epidemiology Studies Unit secure in terms of audit compliance. Her supervisor has acknowledged the quality of her contributions and has said that her strength as a supervisor has ensured the greatest productivity on the unit’s research projects.

Like so many of our Great People winners, it’s not just what she accomplishes but the manner in which she works with others that make her stand out. Her approach is described as kind and helpful to her co-workers resulting in a more harmonious department. In assessing her impact, another of her nominators simply says, "The effect of her diligence and excellence has been a calming one for me."

George Louis
George has been providing administrative support in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at SFGH for three years and is widely seen as the “go to” guy for the program he supports. One of his supervisors describes George as a team player who doesn’t get flustered by the number and variety of requests he receives and is always cooperative.

Once again, it is the manner in which this Great People Award winner provides customer service that truly differentiates him. As his nominator says, “He treats each person, student, staff, faculty and patients as thought their needs are the most important ones for him to address.” George balances the needs and demands of his varied constituents with tact and grace. And his focus on results is simply described by the nominator who said, “When he doesn’t have an answer, he doesn’t stop until he finds it.” These are the kind of attributes that describe a Great Person in the School of Medicine.

Tim Shumway
Tim’s efforts to provide computer support to the School of Medicine’s Dean’s Office have clearly had a significant impact on his clients whose broad support for his nomination incorporated an impressive list of descriptors for him including truly awesome, amazingly competent, nothing short of fantastic and unsung hero. Did I mention “zen master”?

This complex and diverse group of clients appreciate Tim’s style as well as his broad skills. One of his clients says it well, “He always shows up with a smile on his face and always fixes the problem, too!” Another says, “I didn’t just want a fix, I wanted to know what was happening and how I could prevent issues in the future.” It would be tough to find a stronger endorsement than the senior manager who said, “With his wonderful sense of humor, incredible competence, and gracious presence, he is nothing short of fantastic and should be so recognized for exceptional service-before and after hours.”
