Karen Hillman
Karen Hillman, a Crisis Team Coordinator for the AIDS Health Project, manages a team who worked with HIV+ patients with mental and substance abuse problems. The patients are usually in crisis or are unable to care for themselves and have to be hospitalized. One coworker said, “Karen is understanding, flexible and energetic. She has a unique approach to each patient to provide care that fits each one individually yet she is also able to keep to standards of care that are usual and customary for the team. She is brilliant at establishing rapport with patients and helping them work around issues and creating solutions.”
An example of Karen’s leadership is clearly shown by she handled the difficult challenge of staff coverage and still ensure that patient service will not be impacted. Her colleague describes her, “As a supervisor, Karen is patient, humorous and is clear about her expectations of the team. She brings out the best in people by looking at issues from different angles and valuing others’ opinions.”

Bobby W. McCon
Bobby McCon, a Computer Resource Specialist in Fresno Medical Education Program, has captured his colleagues’ overwhelming support for his nomination as a Great Person. They described him as always responsive, very knowledgeable and a pleasure to work with. One staff member said, “He is an excellent example of GREAT customer service! He is able to work with all staff on a variety of IT needs and demonstrates a calm, caring, customer service attitude through each interchange.”
Another co-worker describes Bobby’s many examples of going above and beyond his job description as, “He supported a department in a challenging undertaking to test a prototype tool that involved over 40 raters both nationally and internationally via a web conferencing process. His positive attitude and cooperative team approach helped us through some technological glitches.” One and all his colleagues testify: “Bobby is the heart and soul of UCSF Fresno – cheerful, reliable, good humored, hardworking, and always eager to help. He is simply a great person.”

Christopher A. Perry
Christopher Perry is an SRAII in the CTSI-CRC Sample Processing Laboratory. He identified a problem with CRC’s paper copies of sample management and tracking -- an inefficient process that resulted in misplaced samples/results, lost data and seriously jeopardized the reputation of the Clinical Research Center.
In less than 6 months, Chris automated the sample tracking as well as other improvements -- updating the computer systems, creating new templates and training the staff. Chris worked late, came in on his days off to help the staff when he wasn’t in the hospital. He is broadly appreciated as someone willing to go the extra mile, whether to reprioritize his work load or extend his hours to meet his clients’ needs.
A colleague sums it up, “Chris’s positive attitude and enthusiasm are irreplaceable. His innovative approach has made this project possible. All of the managers and Directors of the CTSI CRC recognize the astounding amount of work Chris put into this project, and wholeheartedly recommend him for the UCSF Great People Award.”

Arica L. Reinhardt
Arica Reinhardt is an Analyst I working in the Department of Medicine – VAMC. She whole-heartedly provides administrative, financial as well as web support to her department. Her manager described her as a “role model for team work and customer service. She greets everyone – from the janitor on up to the PI – with a hello and a smile. She takes on any task or request with enthusiasm and we can always count on her to be efficient and complete her work correctly and ahead of schedule.”
The following example shows how Arica resolved a unique challenge that would have stumped another person. Despite her many efforts to convince the VA to recycle their electronic equipment, Arica hit a dead end. Rather than giving up, Arica took it upon herself to take the equipment to the dump and make sure the materials were properly recycled. Her manager states, “Arica’s positive helpful attitude and cooperative work style is her trademark.”
