He is broadly appreciated as someone willing to go above and beyond in an emergency whether that means the flexibility to reprioritize at a moment’s notice or extending his work hours to meet his clients’ needs. His efforts have ensured that his department has the needed technical support and tools to be successful including the best audiovisual tools for department lectureships or residency course events and an improved website to promote their practice. His clients value Matt as innovative, reliable and a pleasure to work with.

Alberto Y. Marquez
As a Clinical Faculty Affairs Coordinator in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, Alberto Marquez wears many hats. One day he might be working with space planners to coordinate the best use of tight quarters for faculty and staff and on another he could be overseeing the administration of volunteer faculty appointments. Whatever the issue, Alberto responds promptly and handles his varied duties courteously, effectively and, as his nominator says, “with style.”
What sets Alberto apart is his ability to, not only handle the many changing issues at hand, but also to communicate effectively and thoroughly with the members of his unit. For example, if Alberto is handling a malfunctioning copier, he will send out a communication to the everyone in the unit to let them know that a problem has been identified, what the proposed solution is, when it will be implemented and a date by when it be complete. And if for some reason the remedy falls behind schedule, he informs everyone and adjusts his forecast. When the problem has been resolved, he notifies everyone that the copier is back in action and fully functioning. It is this kind of responsiveness and thorough communication that instills confidence and designates Alberto as one of UCSF’s Great People.

Jep W. Poon
Jep Poon has been the Unit Administrator of the Renal Center, SFGH since 2005 and started with the unit as Unit Secretary in 1990. During this time she has played many roles within the unit including Dialysis Patient Care Technician, information technology resource, home dialysis team member, billing coder reviewer and Mandarin and Cantonese patient translator. As her nominator notes, ‘Jep was chosen as unit administrator because of her solid and consistent devotion to the making the Renal Center a great place for patients and staff alike.”
Jep Poon is seen as a role model for teamwork and is always ready to take on new challenges and learn new skills to support the varied needs of the unit. As an example, she recently saved the unit a significant amount of money by taking her weekends to review four years worth of billing for over 100 patients in an effort to ensure the correct billing codes were utilized, thus avoiding Medical/Medicare refusal to pay. This is just one very tangible example of her dedication, competence, resourcefulness as well as her excellent work habits.

Rebecca Wendell Watters
Dr. Rebecca Watters is a key member of the well-being team of the Medical Student Well-Being Program. She has been acknowledged for putting much effort into reaching out to medical students in a way that promotes education well-being and self-care. She has consistently gone the extra mile to assist students with medication and counseling and has often re-arranged her schedule to accommodate students and well being commitments.
Dr. Watters has also taken initiative to improve the day to day operations of her office in a way that greatly enhances the work environment. As an example, when their small upstairs office became so warm that it was physically uncomfortable for the student visits, she investigated air conditioning units that would work in their building. This type of pro-active concern demonstrates her commitment to the day to day operations of the Well-Being Program in addition to reaching out to students and organizing student programs. As her nominator points out, “Dr. Watters is an example of a caring, warm, hard-working physician who is an inspiration to be around.”
