Welcome to the Emergency Medicine Interest Group website. I am Dr. Jeffrey
Tabas, faculty member in the Department of Emergency Services at San Francisco
General Hospital (SFGH) and faculty advisor in Emergency Medicine at the
University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). I would be happy to address
any questions you might have regarding Emergency Medicine.

Preclinical Courses:
- Introduction to Emergency Medicine - Med 170.19 (Director:
Dr. Rachel Chin) introduces first and second-year medical students to
emergency medicine through the use of lectures, role playing, history-taking
exercises, and case presentations. Observation sessions will be arranged
in the emergency room at SFGH and with paramedic ride-alongs. This course
is problem-oriented- it will teach you how to focus on and think about
the chief complaint. It will help bridge the gap between your preclinical

- Procedures in Emergency Medicine is offered to 2nd-year medical
students in the Winter quarter on Monday afternoons. Skills taught in
the elective include phlebotomy, intravenous cannulation, local and
regional anesthesia, arterial puncture, central line placement, suturing,
nasogastric tube placement, airway management, thoracentesis, paracentesis,
splinting, lumbar puncture, and urethral cannulation. Most procedures
are taught on mannequins. Clinical experiences consist of two 8-hour
shifts in the emergency department at SFGH. For more information go

- Wilderness Medicine will review wilderness assessment, medical
care, and survival techniques. Offered Winter quarter, times TBA.
Clinical Rotations:
- Advanced Emergency Medicine (SFGH, Moffitt, Highland, and Fresno)
is offered to 4th-year medical students. This rotation provides extensive
hands-on instruction in procedures, decision-making, and management
of acute care patients. A required elective for students considering
a career in emergency medicine.

- Fresno -
Med 140.90 (Director: Dr. Lori Weichenthal)
- Wilderness Medicine, Fresno will cover major topics
and provide practical experience in wilderness medicine. The course
will allow the student to use the knowledge they have gained by participating
in exercises, including a back country Multicasualty incident drill
and a back country search and rescue drill.
- Advanced Emergency Procedures Cadaver Lab - one credit, offered
two times per year offers hands-on experience with advanced procedures
on cadavers. Procedures include central venous catheterization via the
subclavian vein, internal jugular vein and femoral vein, tube thoracostomy,
saphenous vein cutdown, and emergency cricothyrotomy.
