Frequently asked questions:
-
What is geriatrics?
It's the field of medicine dedicated to the care of older adults. While the government defines old age as beginning at 65, most geriatricians spend the bulk of their time caring for patients in their 80s, 90s, and 100s.
-
Can I join the GIG even if I don't want to become a geriatrician?
By all means. All we ask is that you want to learn how to better understand and care for older adults. Given current demographic trends, physicians in a wide range of specialties will spend much of their time caring for older patients. These include: internists, family physicians, orthopedists, ophthalmologist, dermatologists, general surgeons, EM docs, neurologists, hospitalists, psychiatrists, cardiologists, pulmonologists, palliative medicine specialists, physical medicine and rehabilitation docs, and urologists.
-
What do geriatricians do?
Geriatricians work as primary care providers, hospitalists, researchers, academics, policy makers, and public health professionals. They work in hospitals, universities, community clinics, think tanks, home care programs, nursing homes, public health departments, hospices, and comprehensive adult day programs.
-
How do I become a geriatrician?
Geriatricians first train in internal medicine or family practice then do a 1 (clinical only) to 3 (clinical + research) year fellowship to certify in geriatrics.
-
Can I join the GIG if I'm a student in the school of nursing/pharmacy/dentistry?
Yes! Although founded by students in the medical school, the group's leadership positions and activities are open to students in all of UCSF's professional training programs. Just as geriatric medicine emphasizes the importance of inter- and multi-disciplinary care of patients, at the GIG , we're all for inter- and multi-disciplinary learning.
