Research Projects in Internal Medicine

The faculty in the Department of Medicine very much welcome students to participate in ongoing projects. The opportunities for research and other projects in Internal Medicine are many:

  • clinical research
  • basic science
  • outcomes research/epidemiology
  • international health
  • public health
  • medical education
  • care of underserved populations

How do I get started?

"Who can I talk with about doing student research?"

  • You should begin your research by making an appointment with the Directory for Medical Student Research, Jay Tureen, MD. To make an appointment contact Mario Mercurio at (415) 476-2346 or drop in the Office of Curricular Affairs in S-221.

"I have an interest and I know of a faculty member working in that area."

  • Go ahead and call/email the faculty member. In general they will be very happy to help you.

"I want to do a project but I don't know what kind."

  • Search the faculty roster and under "Departments" select "Medicine" to see brief descriptions of Department of Medicine faculty research interests. The list is quite readable and helpful in helping you to choose a potential faculty mentor!

"I have a research interest but I don't know what faculty work in this area. . ."

  • Search the faculty roster by "keyword or topic" type your interest to see brief descriptions of Department of Medicine Faculty working in that area.

"I want to present my work at a conference but I don't know how."

  • If you are a Medical Student Member of the ACP-ASIM, you are eligible to submit an abstract to the ninth annual Medical Student Abstract Competition. To become a member, go to http://www.acponline.org/college/medstud/student.htm. Ten winners will be awarded an expense-paid trip to Annual Session 2003 to be held in San Diego, California, April 3 - 6, 2003.

To Submit an Abstract, go to http://www.acponline.org/srf/medstud_abstract.htm?in
Posters with information about the competitions will be sent to the Chairs of Medicine and the Deans of Student Affairs in August. Abstracts may be submitted electronically using our online form or by downloading the official "editable" form, also available in August. Mailed entries must be postmarked by November 1, 2002.

"I need more advice before contacting potential research advisors."

  • Feel free to contact Karen Hauer, MD (476-1964, karenha@itsa.ucsf.edu), Internal Medicine Career Advisor, to talk more about narrowing your interests, finding a project, or scheduling research time.
