Call for Abstracts
5th Annual UCSF Global Health Symposium

All UCSF students (Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing, and Graduate Division) are invited to enter the symposium by submitting an abstract describing their international research, project work, or service completed during their professional education. Four students will be selected by a panel of UCSF Global Health Sciences faculty to provide oral presentations at the Symposium on April 25, 2007, between 4:00- 7:00 pm on the Parnassus campus. Each student selected for oral presentation will receive a $200 prize. The remaining applicants are invited to prepare posters for consideration as “Best Poster” at the symposium. Posters will be displayed 4:00-7:00 PM, and following the poster session, there will be a screening of the new movie, Salud!, which documents the Cuban health system and its support for international medical service. This event is an annual showcase of the important work and involvement of UCSF students around the globe. We will compile a compendium of abstracts to further develop international health opportunities for students.

Guidelines for abstract submission:

• Deadline is Sunday, March 25, 2007. Announcement of the four winners will be made by April 10.

• Include: 1) background/purpose, 2) methods, 3) site, 4) outcomes, and 5) discussion regarding the value of the project to global health.

• Use only MS Word, 12 pt type, Times New Roman, one-inch margins.

• Word limit: 400 including title. Do not include graphs, tables or references.

• Submit both a blinded (no authors) and unblinded copy (with authors)

• Please indicate sources of funding at the bottom of the page.

• Be sure to work closely with your faculty sponsor prior to submission.

• Submissions must be sent as an e-mail attachment to the Program Assistant at the Office of International Programs.

• Students selected for oral presentation will be expected to participate in a rehearsal with Dr. Tom Novotny prior to April 25.

• Suggestions for creating effective poster presentations are available on the OIP web site.
