"The most recent update on the NAS has made my work easier. I don’t have to wait for a file restore by a system administrator. I can retrieve any lost or deleted item on the server. This is a big +++.”

“HIPAA compliant storage is the type of storage that we rely on heavily. I don’t have 100% control of the equipment but in return I have 100% peace of mind when I go home at night. A good night’s sleep is what I get.”

David Law
Computing Resource Manager, Department of Pediatrics

Pediatrics

Overview

The Department of Pediatrics at UCSF is committed to excellence in research, education and the clinical care of infants, children and young adults. The department needed an expandable, highly available, reliable, HIPAA compliant and easily accessible storage system to meet their growing storage requirements. The growth in storage comes from research labs and clinical science units .

The Solution

The department uses the ISU storage system to house all of their data. The department receives 200 MB of free file storage per user; complete data backup to disk and tape; offsite backup storage with Iron Mountain; and secure, HIPAA compliant file storage on protected "P " drives for sensitive data.

Results

  • Storage has grown at a rate of 35-40% per year with major growth areas in laboratory and clinical research.
  • Previously underserved labs have moved their data to ISU. The mainly Apple computer users are now able to store and backup their valuable research data.
  • File restores are very simple. Users can restore versions of their files without requesting a copy from tape. Snapshots of data are kept for up to 30 days.
  • The amount of ePHI keeps growing. Data continues to migrate from the regular shared space to the PHI share.
