The Healthy Management of Reality

This 100-page monograph explains the idea developed by Ricardo F. Muñoz that cognitive-behavioral methods work best when they are used to shape one’s personal, day-to-day reality.
The idea came from his work at San Francisco General Hospital with very low-income medical patients, who had many economic, social, and health problems which contributed strongly to their mood problems.  The book was strongly influenced by Albert Bandura’s Social Learning and Social Cognitive theory (Bandura, 1969, 1977), and his work on self-efficacy (Bandura, 1997).  “The Healthy Management of Reality” recommends that we use psychological knowledge about how human beings function to develop a plan to shape our reality in a healthy manner.  Thus, the message of the book involves an acceptance of the limitations as well as the potential of human beings.  This book is dedicated to helping us think about how our thoughts, behaviors, and feelings help channel reality in certain directions.   A realistic goal is not complete control over every aspect of our lives, but a give-and-take that gradually shapes our personal reality in healthy directions.

The other manuals on this Web site are based on the concept of the healthy management of reality.
