GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

Volunteer research assistants wanted to assist with the University of California, San Francisco/San Francisco General Hospital Latino Mental Health Research Program activities

INVESTIGATORS: Ricardo F. Muñoz, Ph.D., Alinne Z. Barrera, Ph.D., Leandro Torres, Ph.D.
STIPEND: $1,000.00 commuting stipend (for the year) will be paid to all selected volunteers.
START DATE: July 1, 2008 (preferable)        END DATE: June 30, 2009

REQUIRED:

  • Research assistants must be willing and able to commit 12 scheduled hours per week. Scheduled hours include a mandatory weekly team meeting, which is currently scheduled on Thursday afternoons from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. The location, day, and time of shifts are flexible.
  • Excellent verbal and written command of (preferably) both English and Spanish. Bilingual (Spanish/English) and bicultural individuals strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Knowledge of simple statistics, some experience with statistical (SPSS) and spreadsheet (Excel) programs.
  • Good attendance, and strong communication and interpersonal skills.  Professional attention to detail including ability to process and organize numerical data is essential. 
  • Experience with Web development, including personal Websites, is desirable.  We are particularly looking for individuals who want to help reduce health disparities globally combining psychology and technology (e.g., evidence-based Internet interventions).

AVAILABLE POSITIONS:

Smoking Cessation Web Study (1 position) Contact Veronica Pitbladdo (veronica.pitbladdo@ucsf.edu)

  • Assist in managing Spanish- and English-language participants via the Web.
  • Assist with testing new site features and functionality in Spanish/English for a worldwide clinical trial. Over 36,000 participants from 170 countries have become official participants of earlier trials.
  • Respond to email queries in English/Spanish. Generate data tables and reports from the study.

Depression Prevention Course (1 position) Contact Veronica Pitbladdo (veronica.pitbladdo@ucsf.edu)

  • Assist in constructing and testing a Spanish/English Internet intervention designed to help people worldwide prevent depression by learning to manage their mood levels using cognitive-behavioral methods.
  • Respond to email queries in English/Spanish.
  • Generate data tables and reports from the study

 

Women and Depression Projects (1 position) Contact Alinne Barrera, Ph.D. (alinne.barrera@ucsf.edu)

  • Assist with testing features and functionality of a prevention of postpartum depression Website.
  • Monitor and manage a Web-based health survey.
  • Assist as needed (e.g., recruitment, administration, etc.) with projects-in-development focused on depression treatment and prevention among Spanish-speaking women.

    Depression Monitoring Project (1 position) Contact Leandro Torres, Ph.D. (leandro.torres@ucsf.edu)

    • Assist with constructing and testing a Spanish/English Web-based depression monitoring/feedback tool for use with local and international patients seeking treatment for depression.
    • Generate data tables and reports from associated studies. Assist in researching personalized web-based health monitoring systems, particularly those focused on depression.

    • Assist with a study of cognitive-behavioral therapy for depression in adolescents in Argentina.
