Faculty Educational Research Grants
What is Educational Research? Educational research concerns scholarly pursuit to better understand the educational process and the learner. The educational process can address questions related to learning, educational strategies, assessment, methodology and outcomes. Research about the learner may include their characteristics and motivations. Learners can span the spectrum from student to practitioner. Educational research methods are both quantitative and qualitative. Educational research is guided by theory, although in some situations the purpose of the research is to generate theory. What is the timeline? Principal investigators will be notified of the status fo their prooposal no later than two months after the deadline. The principal investigator will identify the start date for the grant. All reimbursements must be submitted within 24 months of the start date and the final report is due no later than two years from the start date.
The earliest possible start date is the date of notification of acceptance. However, the study may begin at a later date. The end date is 18 months later, or a shorter period if relevant to the study. The final report is due no later than 24 months from the start date. What can funds be used for? Funds can pay for expenses incurred to do the research. Examples include research assistant time, materials, equipment (except computer hardware), software and travel needed to conduct the research. Cost of preparing a poster may be included. Studies that examine the consequences of curricular innovations in a hypothesis-driven study design may be eligible for an Educational Research Grant.
Funds cannot cover computer hardware, faculty salary or faculty expenses such as travel to conferences, registration fees, and memberships or subscriptions. What kind of research does OME seek to fund? Preference will be given to research that is theory-driven and/or coincides with current UCSF research priority areas. These priority areas are: Is CHR approval required? Yes. To be funded, studies must seek and receive CHR approval, and notify OME of the CHR approval number. What kinds of projects are not appropriate for this funding? This program will not fund curriculum development such as on-line modules or classroom or clerkship educational programs. Such projects that are innovative or novel may be eligible for funding by the Academy of Medical Educators Innovations Funding program. How are proposals reviewed and selected? The proposal, with the principal investigator identified, is reviewed by three committee members using the review criteria. The final decision will be a consensus based on the evaluation by the committee members. What kind of resources can the Program provide? The Educational Research Program may be able to provide services and equipment loans relevant to the research study that may be more convenient or cost-effective than if sought elsewhere, i.e. laptop or voice-recorder loan, transcription services, survey development and processing, etc. An agreement may be necessary before such services or equipment loans are provided. Please contact the Program Coordinator for more information. Whom should I contact for further information? Please contact Victoria Ruddick, Office of Medical Education, Educational Research Program, at 415-502-0157, or ruddickv@medsch.ucsf.edu.
