ANNOUNCEMENTS
The Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Sustainability (CACS) has announced the launch of their third annual Sustainability Awards for 2013, which recognizes individuals and groups for their contributions to sustainability at UCSF. The application deadline has been extended to March 22, 2013.

Nominations are now open for the 14th annual Holly Smith Awards for Exceptional Service to the School of Medicine. Up to three individuals – one faculty, two staff – will be selected to receive this award at the Salute to Excellence ceremony in late May. Nomination packets are due by Wednesday, March 27.

Apply now for the Teaching Scholars Program 2013-2014.

HONORS
Nancy Ascher, MD, PhD, has been selected by the American Medical Women’s Association for their 2013 “Exceptional Mentor” award.

Michael Weiner, MD, was awarded the Potamkin Prize for Alzheimer’s Research.

Shinya Yamanaka, MD, PhD, was among the first 11 people to be awarded the new Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences for his research in induced pluripotent stem cells.

TRANSITIONS
Michael Callaham, MD,
is stepping down as the chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine and Ellen Weber, MD, will take on the role of interim chair effective March 1.

PASSINGS
Maurice Galante, MD, a distinguished surgeon at UCSF for 44 years, passed away on February 5, 2013.

Alan Goldfien, MD, a founding member of UCSF's Cardiovascular Research Institute, died peacefully on January 19, 2013.

Anthony Taliaferro, a key member of UCSF’s web communications team, passed away last month.
