Tour Diagram illustrating pancreatic islet transplantation

More than 1 million Americans suffer from Type 1 diabetes, where the body's immune system destroys the body's insulin-producing islet cells, making it difficult to maintain stable blood sugar levels.

One procedure to help these patient is pancreatic islet transplantation, where islets, which contain the insulin-secreting beta cells, are retrieved through extensive processing of a donor pancreas and then injected into the patient.

This labor-intensive procedure of extracting the islets is carried out at the state-of-the-art UCSF Islet and Cellular Transplantation Facility, a unique place built to meet the absolute highest standards for the manufacture of human cellular and tissue-based products.
