Projects and Legacies

All participants in the HPE Pathway are required to complete a legacy project. Project type and scope will vary among the three tiers of the program. Core Program projects are to be completed within the 2 units of independent study time. Example types of projects include curricular development, evaluation projects, and educational research. Thesis projects in the Masters and Post-Masters Programs are expected to be of significantly larger scope and focused on educational research.

Examples of acceptable Core Program projects are listed below. These are previous legacy projects submitted by participants from the former Medical Education Area of Concentration (AoC), Medical Education Area of Distinction (AoD) and Teaching Scholars Program (TSP).

Med Ed AoC:

•  Dermatology curriculum needs assessment: a multicenter survey of primary care residents and faculty

•  Evaluation of the Program in Medical Education for the Urban Underserved within the UCB-UCSF Joint Medical Program

•  Comparison of traditional learning methods with three-dimensional computer models in helping medical students learn clinical anatomy

Med Ed AoD:

•  Creation of a website for the Medicine Clerkship to instruct medical students in presentation and clinical synthesis skills

•  Creation and evaluation of a genetics curriculum for internal medicine residents

•  Creation of a simulation program for 'codes' in the Department of Medicine

TSP:

•  Teaching of evidence-based-medicine through a web-based surgical module

•  Development of a pediatric transfusion medicine curriculum

•  Breadth of clinical exposure in a pediatric neurology residency
