PRIME-US Community Engagement Program

The goals of the PRIME-US Community Engagement Program are:

  • To provide a framework for working effectively in partnership with urban underserved communities building successful and sustainable partnerships
  • To provide opportunities to work with communities on longitudinal projects (including research) and short-term service learning activities
  • To provide opportunities to promote critical thinking and reflection on experiential learning activities

During the first year, students will learn and put into practice key principles of community engagement:

  • Personal Vision
  • Defining Communities
  • Community Assessment
  • Project Design and Evaluation
  • Funding and Grant Proposals
  • Cultural Humility and Creating Effective Community Partnerships

Over the course of their medical education, San Francisco-based students will participate in a formal community engagement curriculum and work on longitudinal community projects or service learning activities. These projects and activities can be applied to the Master's degree that all students will receive as part of PRIME-US. JMP students integrate community engagement principles into their masters degree project, which they complete during their first three years.

PRIME-US works closely with the Community Partnership Resource Center to design and implement the community engagement curriculum.
