Questions to Ask Your Career Advisor

It is important to make the most of your appointment with your career advisor. Jot down a list of questions or concerns beforehand to help focus your meeting. Even if you don’t get to ask every question on your list, making such a list will force you to think about what you want to ask and will help to get the conversation going.

Sample questions include:

  • What is the residency training like?
  • What sorts of careers do residents generally pursue after training?
  • What fellowships are available?
  • What is a day in the life of this career like?
  • What sort of personality does this career generally attract?
  • What is the job market like? What has been the trend recently?
  • What is the remuneration for various pursuits in this career?
  • How competitive are residency programs?
