| I'm basically an educator at heart, who chose medicine as a
career after deciding that gay teachers weren't going to be 'safe'
professionally for several decades. Although I enjoy my clinical
work, my greatest joy comes from helping people use their own sense
of wonder and inquiry to find and fuel their passion - whether that
be in science, arts or something else entirely.
I graduated from the University of Hawaii School of Medicine and
completed my Psychiatric residency at Harvard Medical School, before
joining the faculty of UCSF in 2000. I am an Assistant Clinical
Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Medical Director of the
Psychosocial Medicine Clinic and the Director of Curriculum for
the UC Berkeley, UCSFJoint Medical Program. My week finds me often
on both campuses. My interests include neural networks as they function
in the service of human learning and memory, with a specific focus
on medical education.
The possibility of being helpful to students as they move through
this complex chapter in their lives is exciting. I am looking forward
to all that I can learn from them and my colleagues in the UCSF
advisory colleges.
