I was born in Newark, New Jersey and, having grown up in New Jersey,
all new locations look pretty exciting to me. I graduated from Livingston
High School in 1979 and spent my undergraduate years at Boston University
as part of the accelerated dental school program. I left this program
after five years to attend Hahnemann University School of Medicine
in order to pursue my career aspiration of being a craniofacial trauma
surgeon. I accomplished my residency in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck
Surgery at St. Louis University working under Michael D. Maves, MD,
MBA.
After residency, I worked in a private practice with a part time affiliation
with Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, but I discovered that I
missed the pace, variety, and teaching opportunities afforded by an
academic position. I was fortunate to be offered an entry level position
in the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at UCSF
in 1993 by Dr. Robert Schindler, and I have been thrilled with my
career at UCSF and San Francisco General Hospital under our current
Chairman, David W. Eisele, MD, ever since. It is at SFGH that I am
able to pursue my interest in craniofacial trauma and reconstructive
surgery. I am currently a professor in the department and Chief of
Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at San Francisco General Hospital.
From an education perspective, I have a broad experience at UCSF.
I have served as a member of the Admissions Committee for the School
of Medicine. I have been in charge of the Resident Selection Committee
for our department and I have served as the Program Director for our
residency program since 1997. In 2003, I was accepted to the Haile
T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators and received the Roger Boles,
MD Endowed Chair in Otolaryngology Education in 2003. I work educationally
with students from all years of the medical school, with interns in
general surgery, residents in otolaryngology/head and neck surgery,
and residents from family and community medicine and internal medicine.
Outside of the hospital, I have many interests. My wife Jennifer and
I have two daughters: Madeleine and Adrienne. We enjoy sailing and
many of the outdoor and cultural activities of Northern California.
I have seen many changes at UCSF during my time at this institution
and I am certain that the best is yet to come for this powerful and
exciting medical school.
It is a pleasure to be involved with the Advisory College system under
Dr. Maxine Papadakis with my partner, Beth Harleman.
