Overview

The UCSF Student Research Committee invites students who have done research while in medical school to enter the Dean's Prize for Research competition.  The competition is open to all medical students, including MSTP students who have not yet begun graduate work.  Past winners may submit entries for new projects. Short-term and long-term projects are judged separately. 

Medical Student Research Poster Session

Students who have received funding from the Dean's Office for research projects are required to present a poster on their work at the Medical Student Research Poster Session, which will be held in conjunction with the reception for the winner(s) of the Dean's Prize for Research in January.  Other students who have completed research projects while in medical school are also encouraged to present.  For those who will be presenting, please see the following for suggestions for preparing a research poster.

To enter the Dean's Prize competition, you must submit a one-page abstract describing your research along with a letter of nomination from your faculty research sponsor to the Office of Curricular Affairs via email to Mario Mercurio (mario.mercurio@ucsf.edu). Your abstract should be well planned and carefully written since selection of the finalists in the competition will be based solely on the abstracts and the supporting letters.

To be selected as a finalist in the competition, you must explain clearly both what you did and why. Your abstract must include:

1. a clear and concise (no more than two sentences) statement of your research question or hypothesis,
2. a brief summary of the background of the project,
3. a synopsis of the methods you used in your research,
4. results, and
5. a summary of the conclusions of your study.

You should bear in mind that many members of the Student Research Committee, who will be judging your abstract, are not experts in your field of research. Consequently, your abstract should be written in language that would make it clear to any member of the UCSF faculty. Be careful to avoid jargon.

Your abstract must be limited to one page, must have margins of at least 1 inch on all sides, and must use a 12-point or larger type size (no more than 10 characters per inch).

The names of the finalists in the competition will be announced in October. Finalists will present their 10-minute oral presentations to the committee in November. The winning research talks will be presented at a reception which will be held in January.
