Privacy Concerns

Confidentiality is a concern for all students. The Well-being Program will do its utmost to protect your privacy. We are located a short distance off campus to ensure your privacy. We do not have drop-in hours for privacy protection. All meetings are by appointment only. We are separate from the School of Medicine in order to provide confidential consultation, treatment and referral services.

All counseling discussions with Well-being staff are strictly confidential and will not become part of your school file. The staff will not release information to other individuals unless you authorize them to do so.

Treatment at Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute
You may bypass the ordinary intake process at LPPI by initailly being seen at the Well-being Program. We will help you get hooked up with a treating physician or psychologist at LPPI, if this is appropriate. When being seen at LPPI, you can make alternate arrangements for meeting your therapist rather than waiting in the waiting room. Medical student cases are not discussed in case conferences at LPPI.

Emergency Procedures/Hospitalizations
Because UCSF medical students do clinical work in Moffitt/Long Emergency Room, in the event that you are having a psychiatric emergency, you may choose to be seen at an alternate emergency room to protect your privacy. Mills Peninsula Medical Center, Seton Medical Center, and Alta Bates/Herrick Medical Center are the preferred emergency room for psychiatric emergencies. However, student health insurance will cover emergency treatment at any emergency room. Please feel free to ask us any questions you have regarding privacy and confidentiality. See Urgent/ER page.
