is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community
Medicine. Her primary interest in the doctor-patient relationship drives
her research, teaching and clinical work. As an educator, she works
on culture in medicine, human sexuality/LGBTI issues and professionalism.
She has designed small groups to teach culture objectives, organized
panels on professionalism, and produced a videotape highlighting challenges
in sexual history-taking. In addition she supervises third year medical
students in her clinical practice at Lakeshore, where she likes to emphasize
the patient-centered method. She has completed a research training fellowship
at UCSF focusing on anthropological and qualitative methods. This year
she is beginning work on an NIH career development award that compares
the understandings of menopause that emerge from women's experiences
with the clinical discussions of midlife change. Dr. Hill-Sakurai is
a graduate of Ramsey Family and Community Medicine Residency in St.
Paul/Minneapolis, University of Iowa College of Medicine and Carleton
College. She enjoys hiking, cooking and jewelry making.
