Teaching Scholars Program

Selma Omer (TSP 2006-2007) is a medical education post-doctoral fellow in Global Health Sciences (GHS), UCSF. She completed her undergraduate degree in Biochemistry at the University of Reading, Department of Animal and Microbial Sciences, UK and subsequently her PhD in Molecular Endocrinology. She has recently completed a three-year post-doctoral research post in Molecular Neuroendocrinology at The University of Oxford, Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, UK. She has previously participated in the UCSF-Muhimbili University of Health Sciences (MUCHS, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania) collaboration, where she was sent as a visiting lecturer in Biochemistry to help in the urgent need for Biochemistry lecturers in the Faculty of Medicine (Jan-March 2006). She is currently conducting the first part of her fellowship based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to continue work started in Winter 2006 on blending interactive teaching activities into the Biochemistry course. She will also assist in revising the Biochemistry course curriculum particularly to address some of the areas of overlap between the first-year Biochemistry course, Anatomy and Histology. Additionally she intends to introduce a small, optional IT course for first-year students that may involve the use of more technologically advanced students helping teach the course. She will spend the remainder of her fellowship time based in UCSF acting as a link between GHS and medical education and hopes to participate in the advancement of medical education and the expansion of well-trained educators in countries that would benefit from these activities.
