Teaching Scholars Program

Jo Ellen Brainin-Rodriguez, MD (TSP 2000-2001) is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry. She has been on the staff of San Francisco General Hospital since 1989 in various positions, including Women's Team leader, attending physician in Psychiatric Emergency Services, and Unit Chief overseeing the Latino and Women's Focus Inpatient Programs. Currently she is the medical director of Bridge to Wellness, an intensive outpatient day treatment program. Her long-standing interest in medical student and resident education led her to develop a course on cultural issues in psychiatry, and she co-led the core curriculum course for third year medical students at SFGH for nearly ten years. Current interests include cultural and psychological issues in end-of-life care. Dr. Brainin-Rodriguez received her MD at UCSF, completed an internship in Medicine at SFGH, worked as a GP for the National Health Service Corps, then later completed her residency in Psychiatry at St. Mary's Hospital in San Francisco.
