U.S. and Canadian Medical Students

Many UCSF School of Medicine electives are available to visiting students who are currently registered in their final year at an accredited medical school in the U.S. or Canada. All departments use a standard application and health certification form. You must meet all of the requirements on their requirements page. The department where you would like to complete your elective may have additional requirements.

Applicants must complete a separate application for each elective they wish to take. Please note that Canadian students must complete an Application for Canadian Students (see applications). Students interested in completing electives in Fresno, California, should visit the UCSF-Fresno web site.

Fees: The maximum amount of elective time for all visiting students is 3 months. U.S. and Canadian students are charged a non-refundable processing fee of $150.00 for each four-week elective scheduled.* Cash and credit cards are not accepted. Checks should be made payable to: UC Regents.

International Medical Students

Openings for international students are limited and are available only in the departments of:

• Anesthesiology
• Radiology

The maximum amount of elective time for visiting students is 3-months. The processing fee for international medical students is $500.00* per four-week elective (Canadian students pay $150.00* per four-week elective). UCSF and visiting students from the United States and Canada are given preference.

*NOTE:
Due to the new Department of Homeland Security regulations, there will be a $300 processing fee for international students (including Canadian students) covering Services to International Students and Scholars. International students who apply to two or more departments must clearly state this on the application and inform the department. If visa documents are delivered by courier, applicants should expect to pay between $15 - $25 for this service.
