Psychiatry

Thank you for your interest in the Department of Psychiatry's clinical electives. When space is available, U.S., Canadian and osteopathic visiting students (we do not accept international students) may apply to participate in our electives. There is no remuneration for these electives and neither room nor board is provided.

UCSF gives priority for all fourth year electives to its own medical students through a lottery system which is finalized just prior to the first summer electives. Only after the UCSF lottery is complete are we able to offer electives to visiting students. This makes it virtually impossible for us to offer an early elective to any visiting students. Realistically, the earliest that visiting students can be expected to be offered an elective is the third elective block which typically begins at the end of August or early September. In addition, it is difficult to foresee how many available spaces there will be for visiting students.

Visiting medical students are accepted here based on their record, their interest in and application status for the UCSF Psychiatry Residency Program, and of course space availability.

The maximum amount of elective time for visiting students is 3 months/12 weeks at UCSF.
