I was trying to open our new site and received the error "Can't find a valid editor for this file extension".

Rather than first navigating to your file, then opening it, start by opening Dreamweaver, then navigate to your file from within Dreamweaver.

Open Dreamweaver. Go to File > Open. Navigate to the file you want to open. Make sure files type is set to 'all'.'

Set File Types to 'All'

Why won't Dreamweaver 4 open aspx file types?

Dreamweaver 4 will not open up aspx file types unless you have changed its configuration first.

  1. Locate the extensions.txt file in C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Dreamweaver 4\Configuration. Open this file with Notepad.
  2. Make a backup copy of the Extensions.txt file.
  3. Open Extensions.txt in Dreamweaver or in a text editor such as NotePad.
  4. Add ASPX (in capital letters) to the beginning of the file, to make it the first line of the file.
  5. Save the file, quit Dreamweaver, and start Dreamweaver again.

I don't seem to have the CSS options available to me. I tried right-clicking the text, but the only option under CSS was 'none'.

Most likely, you have mapped your V drive and/or your DreamWeaver to the wrong location (probably to your own site within the overall School of Medicine site). You need to be mapped to the root because several design/redesign folders (including that folder where the master CSS files reside) are found in the root of the Medschool site.

Please review the tutorials on mapping a network drive and mapping DreamWeaver. Be sure to follow them exactly. Rember that you should be mapping to the Medschool root, NOT to your site within it.

My links look too large! They don't look like the rest of the text in the table or in the RightHandNav.

Briefly, this is because our style sheet formats links to fit in with the content text (such as you see here.) In order to maintain the special formatting of preformatted table or of a 'see also' table, you have to apply the special styles to the link itself. Don't worry, this will become more when you review the tutorial on Formatting Links in Tables .

I would like not to have the printer-friendly icon show up on certain of my pages. How can I make this happen?

To suppress the printer-freindly icon and functionality, simply add this code (exactly as presented here) to the bottom of your content area:

<!--pfoverride-->

DreamWeaver tells me that it is automatically updating files, I find this annoying while I am trying to do my work. Is this important? Can I stop it from doing this if not?

No, this is not critical to your work and yes, you can stop it from doing this. Proper DreamWeaver setup would have prevented it, but it's not too late to fix it now.

Go to Site>Edit Sites, or double-click on the site to edit it. Select the Remote Info option and be sure that the "Access" tab is set to "None". Then click 'OK'.

Flash is not showing up in my web page.

To get the flash player working:

  1. Quit all open programs. This step is important because other programs may be using the Flash Player, and if they are, the uninstaller will fail silently.
  2. Run the Adobe Flash Player Uninstaller.
  3. Reinstall your Flash player.
