Text Formatting with CSS

Applying CSS Styles

You will not use Dreamweaver's Property Inspector to format text when using the School of Medicine templates.

We have provided preformatted styles for you to use instead.

To apply these styles to your text, (in DreamWeaver) select the text, right click, scroll to 'CSS Styles' then select the style you wish to use from the pop up list. The styles you will use are listed in capital letters.

Using CSS Styles

Note: Browsers read links independently from the text surrounding them. So, in order for links to show up properly in text to which CSS has already been applied, you will need to apply the CSS to the link itself as well.

Example:
This text is in the smalltext class. This link does not have a class applied specifically to it, so it looses the special formatting and reverts to the standard page formatting.

This text is in the smalltext class. We have re-applied the smalltext class directly to the link as well so that it will retain the special formatting.

Removing CSS Styles

When you apply two or more CSS styles to the same text, the styles may conflict and produce unexpected results, so generally, if you want to change a style, remove it first then apply a new one.

To remove a style, select the text right-click as above, then select 'none' in the pop-up selections.

Removing Font Formatting

Please do not leave or create font formatting in your documents. There may be residual font formatting from previous versions of your page.

You will never need to use the font formatting options in your Dreamweaver's properties panel.

Dreamweaver can clean up font tags for you very simply.

Open the document.

  • In the 'design/redesign view' select the text, or 'select all'.
  • Choose Text > Font > Default to remove font-family.
  • Choose Text > Size > Default to remove font-size.
