School of Medicine Key Educational Skills Workshop

Clinical Teaching: Educational Strategies to Promote Clinical Diagnostic Reasoning

Principal Faculty:
Judith L. Bowen, MD
Professor of Medicine
OHSU Division of General Internal Medicine

This session will focus on teachers' roles in promoting clinical learners' development of diagnostic reasoning as they mature into independent clinicians with advanced reasoning. Dr. Bowen will provide a brief overview of the diagnostic reasoning process in clinical settings followed by several case discussions that illustrate clinical learners at different stages of reasoning development. For each case, participants will identify clues in case presentations that point to a learner "diagnosis" and discuss educational strategies to help learners move from novice toward expert in their clinical reasoning. By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1) Describe basic strategies used in clinical reasoning

2) Identify clues in clinical case presentations that lead to identifying reasoning stages and problems

3) Diagnose learners' reasoning problems

4) Apply teaching strategies to learner diagnoses that promote the development of more advanced diagnostic reasoning
