School of Medicine Key Educational Skills Workshop

Leading from the Middle

Principal Faculty:

Joan Y. Reede, MD, MPH, MS
Dean for Diversity and Community Partnership
Harvard Medical School

While faculty members may feel that being outside a leadership role precludes them from designing effective organizational change, they actually are often in the perfect position and time in their career to do just that. This workshop will address developing and using networks both internal and external to facilitate collaborations that can lead to the desired change.

At the end of this session participants will be able to:

        • Identify and utilize networks for building collaborations.
        • Develop a plan to create a desired change.

During the session the participants will:

        • Review principles for leading change from one’s current position within an organization.
        • Share ideas of changes that they would like to see in their work environment.
        • Work in small groups to design a plan for a desired change.
